April 2009 - Members of the Cash for Containers Reference Group recently visited South Australia to see the operational workings of that State’s cash for container scheme.

The Reference Group also met with South Australian Government Officials and the local recycling industry to discuss how their scheme operates.

The Reference Group will use this information to shape an effective Territory wide cash for container scheme.

Cash for Container Scheme for the Territory

In March 2009, the Chief Minister Paul Henderson announced a ‘cash for containers’ scheme will be introduced in the Northern Territory, to reduce litter and increase the efforts around recycling.

The cash for containers scheme will see the Northern Territory become the first jurisdiction in Australia to commit to this initiative since the South Australian Government introduced its legislation in 1975.

The Chief Minister has said that a cash for containers scheme that is financially viable, legally sound and can deliver in both urban and remote centres will be in place by 2011. Legislation will be required to go before Parliament to enact the cash for containers scheme for Territorians.

A Reference Group has been established to progress the cash for containers scheme. The group is comprised of Minister Karl Hampton MLA, Gerry Wood MLA (Member for Nelson) and Michael Gunner MLA (Member for Fannie Bay). The Reference Group will meet monthly and have already visited South Australia to see first hand how that state manages its Container Deposit Legislation.
